Bear spray control !?!

This article had me laughing so hard I could barely tell my husband about it. I know I have already made fun of Canada a couple of times, but really, they are askin' for it.

A few choice excerpts:
"In a city where bear spray is involved in as many crimes as guns are - over 700 incidents in 2006 and 2007- it didn't take long for the officers to divine the rowdies' intentions."
The use of bear spray while committing a crime is as common at the use of a gun? Wow, I guess gun control is really working up there in Canada, eh?

Here comes the government to the rescue!
"In what may be the first mention of bear spray in a Throne Speech, the NDP government recently vowed to "limit access to animal repellants, which in the past have been used in burglaries and assaults."

And as of Jan. 1, the province mandated all bear-spray vendors to acquire a licence and record each customer who buys the substance.

Most retailers had already required customers to sign a declaration saying they would only use the spray in case of a dog or bear attack. "

Well, of course we will believe them if they say it will only be used on animals....

Again, I read the comments for this article (how could you not!). Most of the readers seem to have a lot of sense and see the complete nonsense of trying to regulate bear spray. What's next - regulation of kitchen knives, scissors, hot sauce in spray bottles, rocks, and pointy sticks?

Now that I have written my post, I am going to finish what I set out to do before all this Canadian lunacy distracted me: Become an official member of the 2nd Amendment Sisters.

And remember: If bear spray it outlawed, only outlaw bears will have spray...

Or maybe Canada should adopt the U.S. Second Amendment but change it to: Keep and arm bears...

Not to worry,"eh"
The NDP party is a joke and very few Canadians care much what they say or think. This bear spray fiasco will go by the wayside. You know politicians, some of them havn't got the smarts to talk about anything meaningfull. They seem to just want to hear themselves talk!
If I were you, a proponent of the second amendment, I wouldn't be laughing about anything right now.
As i follow closely your situation with your new Democrat Prez. If he and the rest of the gun hating Democrats have their way you'll have serialised ammunition and ALL your firearms will have to be licensed. (the ones you are still allowed to own that is) Every gun owner will have to pass an exam showing litteracy, competance and handling of firearms and so on.
You can forget about owning AR-15's and any other semi-automatic rifles that they deem to be "assault weapons".
You can also forget about your right to conceiled carry which you now enjoy in 38 of your states. You will be lucky if you can still own handguns. You'll hope they want to ban bear spray and leave your firearms alone.
Not to worry, it won't happen over night completely. Nobama the muslim will slowly take your gun rights away from you. Only the cops and military will have guns if he gets his way...and he is after all your elected man, which leads me to believe there are a lot of your fellow citizens that also don't want guns around. (one would have to have thier head stuck in the sand to not know what his agenda was on gun control during the primaries for the democrats)
On a parting note i just want to say right now we have a Conservative government that just yesterday introduced a bill to scrap the hated long gun registry, hopefully it will go through.
Contrary to what a lot of Americans think, we Canadians do own handguns and AR-15's and other so called "assault weapons" not to mention rifles and shotguns however unfortunately we can't carry handguns.
If your husband is a hunter and/or shooting enthusiast as you seem to be, he won't be laughing for long.
I do hope that the NRA and your fellow gun owners have a big enough influence on the powers that be.
We are all aware of what happened to the British and Australians.
All the best,

Thanks for your comment! I do follow 2nd amendment related issues. I don't think Obama wants to rock the boat too much right now, especially since he is on record stating that he agrees with the DC vs. Heller decision. But I do expect his administration to try to increase regulation. However, the gun friendly states are going to put up quite a fight so I don't think there will be much to worry about in the near future. People who are serious about their gun rights move to states that allow them to enjoy those rights. Nonetheless, one can't have too many guns...

Thanks for the info. about the legislation to scrap the registry in Canada. I was quite impressed with the comments in the article as most people rightly wanted to see criminals punished, not law abiding citizens.

I should probably slow down on my Canada bashing. I have some French Canadian ancestry not to mention quite a few relatives who are Canadian.

Hi Nadya

I thought i would send you this information, you have likely read/heard about it but if not, here it is.
This is not my writing, I just copied it.

The liberals are at it again. In a new bill introduced the first day of present session of Congress, and with zero coverage from the MSM, H.R. 45 (Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009) targets all gun owners in the U.S.A.

This nefarious bill seeks to strip us all of our Constitutional Rights to possess and bear firearms of any distinction. It requires, within the first two years, that all new guns be registered. The bill goes retroactive after two years. Meaning that two years after the passage of the bill, ALL FIREARMS in a citizen’s possession must be registered, not just those purchased after the bill passes, and this apparently applies to antique firearms as well.

Every five years the firearm owner must go through a complete renewal process for each weapon owned. Failure to comply carries stiff penalties including confiscation of the firearms and jail time (penalties as high as ten years imprisonment in some cases). The bill also authorizes government searches without warrant, the creation of a federal bureaucracy to monitor firearm possession, etc.

The following is a summary of the bill as provided by the Congressional Research Service. If you read the whole bill, you'll find it will effectively preclude the ownership of any firearms by law-abiding people unless directly licensed by the Attorney General :

1/6/2009--Introduced. Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009 - Amends the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act to prohibit a person from possessing a firearm unless that person has been issued a firearm license under this Act or a state system certified under this Act and such license has not been invalidated or revoked. Prescribes license application, issuance, and renewal requirements.

Prohibits transferring or receiving a qualifying firearm unless the recipient presents a valid firearms license, the license is verified, and the dealer records a tracking authorization number. Prescribes firearms transfer reporting and record keeping requirements. Directs the Attorney General to establish and maintain a federal record of sale system.

Prohibits: (1) transferring a firearm to any person other than a licensee, unless the transfer is processed through a licensed dealer in accordance with national instant criminal background check system requirements, with exceptions; (2) licensed manufacturer or dealer from failing to comply with reporting and record keeping requirements of this Act;
(3) failing to report the loss or theft of the firearm to the Attorney General within 72 hours; (4) failing to report to the Attorney General an address change within 60 days; (5)
keeping a loaded firearm, or an unloaded firearm and ammunition for the firearm, knowingly or recklessly disregarding the risk that a child is capable of gaining access, if a child uses the firearm and causes death or serious bodily injury.

Prescribes criminal penalties for violations of firearms provisions covered by this Act. Directs the Attorney General to: (1) establish and maintain a firearm injury information clearinghouse; (2) conduct continuing studies and investigations of firearm-related deaths and injuries; and (3) collect and maintain current production and sales figures of each licensed manufacturer. Authorizes the Attorney General to certify state firearm licensing or record of sale systems.

Good luck with these issues. I realize it's just a bill that gets put before Congress but from what i understand the Senate as well as the House of Reprasentatives is loaded with gun hating Democrats which could be a significant problem-to say the least.
If a law like this passes, it will be just the beginning, Once they start they won't stop until the only people that have guns will be criminals.

Although we live in diffrent countries, we face similar problems. We are both affected by what happens in the others countries. As you know the NRA as well as both the Republicans and Democrats follow gun control laws in other countries so as to use it to thier benefit(or not)in the media and debates ect.

I will continue to follow these issue's in your country as well as mine.

Gun control doesn't work, just like prohibition didn't work. How many billions of dollars has your gov't spent trying to stop drug importing, drug manufacturing and drug use.
What has it really done?

I don't think violent criminals or the mentally ill should have firearms either but criminals don't register thier guns anyway so why make the law abiding person suffer.

Self defense is a right! not a privalidge. The cops won't be there to protect us when someone threatens our lives on the street orin our own homes. By the time the cops show up it's usually too late.

All the best and stay armed!
